Written by: Tanibel Ang

The Philippines food and beverage market is evolving quickly, shaped by shifting consumer behaviour and new growth channels. Health consciousness, social media influence and a desire for unique experiences are driving demand for innovation, while foodservice and online platforms are expanding opportunities beyond traditional retail.

These themes were on full display at WOFEX 2025 in Manila, where distributors, suppliers and industry leaders gathered to share insights and showcase innovation. The event offered a timely snapshot of the opportunities and challenges shaping the market today.

Key Market Trends

Health and Wellness: Health-focused consumption is rising, especially among Gen Z. Consumers are seeking products with functional benefits, clean labels and better nutritional profiles, while reducing alcohol intake and adopting more active lifestyles.

Dietary Shifts: Concerns about diabetes, cholesterol and other health issues are steering consumers towards low-sugar, low-fat and lighter alternatives, even as traditional indulgent flavours remain popular.

Price Sensitivity: Affordability continues to drive decisions in the mass market. Brands must balance health-conscious positioning with accessible pricing.

Food Exploration: Travel and social media are fueling demand for global flavours, fusion dishes and premium experiences, particularly among mid to high-income consumers.

Consumer Behaviour

Health-driven choices: Functional drinks, plant-based foods and gut-friendly products are gaining traction.

Social media influence: Viral trends and influencer-led promotions strongly shape purchasing.

Experience over routine: Visual appeal and novelty drive demand, particularly among younger urban consumers.

Market Channels

Foodservice Growth: Restaurant and café openings are expanding rapidly, with distributors drawn to higher margins and simpler operations.

Retail Pressures: Suppliers face high listing fees, stricter requirements and upfront investments, making smart investment choices critical

E-commerce Potential: Online grocery and delivery remain small, but are growing steadily through aggressive promotions and convenience-driven adoption.

WOFEX 2025 Highlights

WOFEX Manila 2025 provided valuable insight into the industry’s momentum. While smaller in scale compared to past editions, the event attracted strong participation from distributors, suppliers and senior executives. The first day, reserved for trade visitors, created an energetic environment for business-focused discussions and networking.

Key Observations:

Compact, targeted format: Attendees could cover the exhibition floor in under two hours. Although fewer small brands were present, major distributors and established players were out in force, giving the event a sharper commercial focus.

Foodservice and industrial orientation: Exhibitors highlighted solutions tailored to foodservice and industrial applications, reflecting broader market growth in these channels. Distributors expressed particular interest in products that could complement and extend their current portfolios.

Distributor-led innovation: A notable feature was the unveiling of new dairy and chilled product innovations. Several companies showcased European and North American sourcing initiatives, while one distributor revealed an upcoming launch of a Southeast Asian yogurt line with a 70-day shelf life, an innovation with clear logistical advantages for chilled supply chains.

WOFEX reinforced the Philippines market’s appetite for innovation and underlined the pivotal role of distributors in driving product development and channel expansion.
